Based on the Feeding America Map the Meal Gap, 2023, more than 300,000 Iowans are experiencing food insecurity. A 12% food insecurity rate in the state reflects the impact of high grocery costs and a variety of challenges facing Iowans.
The six food banks serving Iowa (Northeast Iowa Food Bank, HACAP Food Reservoir, Food Bank for the Heartland, River Bend Food Bank, Food Bank of Iowa and Food Bank of Siouxland) are Feeding America members working together with more than 1,500 partners to alleviate hunger in Iowa.
More than 120,220 children go to bed hungry in Iowa which represents a 16.6% food insecurity rate in the state.
Seniors (ages 60 and above) living across the state are also experiencing difficulty to put food on the table with 51,536 seniors in need of food reflecting a 6.7% senior hunger statistic in Iowa.
